Steve Ornstein: Reflections at 81: A Life Lived Fully

Steve Ornstein: Reflections at 81: A Life Lived Fully

At 81, I often sit in quiet amazement at how quickly life has passed. All those years and experiences now feel like they happened in the blink of an eye. Yet when I was living them, many moments seemed to stretch on forever.

I find myself alone now, without my beloved partner, friend, and companion of 48 years. Her absence has changed my life in ways I could never have imagined. That deep bond we shared is impossible to fully describe in words — it became an inseparable part of who I am.

What makes this present chapter worth living is the loving support of my family — my children and grandchildren. They bring light and purpose to my days. Many of the dear friends Liz and I spent endless time with have passed on. Those special, deep relationships we shared feel irreplaceable. The friends I have today are wonderful, but they cannot replace the brothers and sisters who filled our lives with unconditional love and attention.

No one truly prepares you for the realities of aging, though life teaches the lessons well enough. Despite taking good care of my body and health, unexpected challenges sometimes appear and disrupt daily life. These are simply part of the journey.

The memories I share here come from quiet moments of reflection during my daily meditation. Thoughts arise and pass, yet many remain embedded in my being — shaped by a life rich with experiences that have made me who I am today.

I have no bucket list. My life has already been filled with amazing travels and adventures. I lived fully, without regret. I feel deeply blessed to have sat with some of the most enlightened beings, listening with an open heart and mind. Even today, I remain in contact with a few dear friends from the past who still belong in that category.

Living in Israel is indescribable. It is truly HOME for me — a place of rest and belonging even amid the turmoil of the world. The love and caring I experience in the daily moments here is a constant blessing. I immerse myself in it fully as a member of this remarkable homeland. I have no desire to leave, even for a short trip. I am home, and I love it with all my heart.

At 81, I have experienced incredible places and met people from every religion and culture. Yet no place matches the comfort and rightness of home.

Judaism, for me, is a deeply personal experience. Having lived in many different Jewish and spiritual communities over the years, I cherish that here in Israel, the essence of spiritual and religious life is available in every city and village — as much or as little as one desires, simply walking down the street.

So here I am — grateful beyond words. I thank everyone who has made my life richer and more blessed. May we all continue to share the love we are part of, right here and now, in the present moment.
