Patient Awaiting Liver Transplant Transported by New ICU Ambulance to Son’s Wedding for Free
A man awaiting a liver transplant in Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital in Jerusalem wished to attend the wedding of his son which was scheduled to take place in Bnei Brak some 70 kilometers away. The drive which usually takes over an hour to complete, would not be able to be traversed by the ill patient without the accompaniment of a medical team consisting of a paramedic and an intensive care unit ambulance (ICU) at the least.
The family of the ill patient, not having the financial capabilities of renting an ICU for the night, something that would normally cost thousands of shekel, contacted United Hatzalah in order to see if the organization could find a solution for them. Having inaugurated their first ICU unit at the beginning of the month, United Hatzalah was happy to be able to help out the family, and enable the man to be on hand for his son’s nuptials.
Paramedic and nurse Uriel Amrani together with ambulance driver and EMT Yossi Polishuk took it upon themselves to drive the man to the wedding, stay for the entirety of the festivities and then return the man back to the hospital in Jerusalem. During the festivities, the pair of volunteers said that there was not a dry eye to be found in the room when the father walked his son down the aisle. The family profusely thanked the organization and the dedicated volunteers who went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that the father could participate in the wedding.
