A dancer recommended Renana Raz’s work to me shortly after I arrived
in October, and when I finally saw her Kazuaria in February, I found
that it was well worth the wait. Renana’s thorough, thoughtful
approach to creating dramatic dances and her inspired use of the Druze
debka dance proved to be a winning combination in this energetic
piece. A week after the performance, Renana sat down with me to talk
about putting her family onstage in We Have Been Called to Go, her
attraction to folkloric material, her interest in exploring extremes
through movement, and how her compelling choreography both reflects
and transcends Israeli culture.
