Today is Israel Memorial Day Yom HaZikaron in Israel. The memorial siren to commemorate those brave men and women who fell in battle or were victims of terrorism sounded while I was in the market (schuk). It is so impressive because everything stops in motion for one minute. It’s like one took a photograph. This is a very serious commemoration in Israel because of all our wars of defense. Almost all Israeli’s have been touched by either a family members fatality or a close friend. I attended a ceremony at a IDF facility here in Netanya last night. It was shocking that for one and half hours every thirty seconds a different man.woman,or child was shown on a giant TV screen of all who had perished since the 1947 War of Independence. This was accompanied by speeches, prayers, and wreath laying. The evening was completed with the hundreds of people who were in attendance singing our national anthem Hatikvah. In both cases I felt the sorrow but also the feeling of how very meaningful to me as a relatively new immigrant being an Israel citizen.
