 The Suzanne Dellal Center

On my first day touring the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance in
October, faculty member Vered Aviv introduced me to Yair Vardi and
suggested that I meet with him to get a unique, thorough perspective
on Israeli contemporary dance.  It was an excellent suggestion: when
it comes to this topic, Yair has an unparalleled perspective.  Besides
directing the Academy’s dance program, he is the director of the
Suzanne Dellal Center, the home for much of the country’s dance
activity (think Lincoln Center but with an overwhelming emphasis on
dance).  We recently sat down in his office in Jerusalem to discuss
the development of dance in Israel since his own performing career
with the Batsheva Dance Company, the Academy’s dance training, the
myriad of activities at the Suzanne Dellal Center, and what is Israeli
about Israeli contemporary dance.

Deborah’s research is supported by a Fulbright student grant, funded
by the US-Israel Educational Foundation and hosted by the Jerusalem
Academy of Music and Dance.
