Lee Diamond – Take a Step Backwards
Sitting Alone
In a jogging park
People watching
Young and old
Men Women
Each at their own pace
Out of the blue
Two joggers
Stepping backwards
Slowly but surely
Moving forward
But looking backwards
Coming toward them
Joggers moving forward
Leaving the last lap
Behind them
Seeing only forward.
Safe and secure
The step backward
Is less secure
Less guaranteed
Even dangerous
But the step forward only
Though safe
Can’t value
From whence
We come.
Moving forward
With back steps
Toward the destination
While watching the direction
From whence we come
May be unsafe
But full of direction.
Perhaps the “step back”
Allows us to see?
