Calm returned on Tuesday after a two-day flare-up between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad that raised fears of an escalation a week before Israel’s general election. After two days of intense fighting, which saw over 80 rockets and mortar shells launched from Gaza into Israel’s south, a ceasefire seems to have been upheld. A majority of the projectiles were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. There were no reports of casualties or serious injuries on the Israeli side, but a children’s playground was severely damaged by the rocket fire.  The IDF responded to multiple rocket attacks on Monday by striking targets in the coastal enclave, including an Islamic Jihad base in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, according to The Times of Israel. Road and rail routes were reopened in southern Israel, but around 65,000 students remained off school. The main border crossing between the Palestinian enclave and Israel reopened for medical cases only, the Israeli defense ministry said.
