UNPACKED – The Kibbutz: Israel’s Collective Utopia

If there’s one thing that’s always set Israel apart, it’s the kibbutz movement. Founded in the early 20th century, these collective settlements helped shape the country’s identity in the days before the State of Israel was established.

Based on the idea that everything – from food to children – should be shared, the young immigrants who set up the first kibbutzim threw out the old European way of living and sought to create a system of complete equality.

Watch this week’s episode of History of Israel Explained to find out more about the impact of the kibbutz movement on Israeli society and discover why they continue to play an important role in Israel today.
