Ten New Dead Sea Scrolls Unveiled at Discovery Times Square

Discovery Times Square (226 West 44th Street) announced today that 10 new scrolls, two of which have never before been seen publicly, will be on display in the exhibition, Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in Biblical Times beginning February 6.

The newly installed scrolls include “Greek Minor Prophets” and “Job Targum,” which have never been on public display, as well as several that are making their New York City debut. The new scrolls were added to replace the 10 existing ones, which were removed after a planned three month display because of the scrolls’ fragile nature and sensitivity to light and humidity.

“The new installation of scrolls provides a unique opportunity to view even more of the collection,” said Dr. Risa Levitt Kohn, exhibition curator. “Among some of the new scrolls on display is one of only six scrolls written with red ink, a Psalms scroll with poetry that is still part of Jewish liturgy today and two impressive pieces that have never before been on public display. Also, we now have on display at the same time scrolls in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, the three languages found among the scrolls.”

Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in Biblical Times, which runs through April 15, features the most comprehensive collection of ancient artifacts from Israel ever organized, including 20 of the famed 2000-year-old Dead Sea Scrolls, a stone from the Western Wall and more than 500-never-before-seen artifacts from biblical times. The exhibition provides a unique window into the period when the traditions we know as Judaism and Christianity emerged from ancient Israel.

The exhibit was created by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) from the collections of the Israel National Treasures and produced by Discovery Times Square and The Franklin Institute.

Following its New York Engagement, the exhibition will travel to Philadelphia’s The Franklin Institute for a 5-month run beginning in May.
