Reflections on a Life of Growth and Gratitude

I often find myself overwhelmed by the anger and violent threats that permeate online spaces. Reading comments that ridicule or embarrass others has become disturbingly common. Social media, now a primary source of news and commentary, has replaced traditional media in influence, fostering a generation that feels liberated to engage in both love and hate dynamics with abandon. It’s a stark contrast to my own coming-of-age in the 1960s, a time of protest and self-discovery that shaped me in profound ways.

The 1960s: A Time of Protest and Community

Reflecting on my time in the 1960s, I realize that my generation, particularly those of us living and studying in New York, had a unique experience. We participated in demonstrations against the Vietnam War, but for the most part, we were well-behaved and respectful, avoiding violence or property damage. There were, however, a few groups who seemed to take pleasure in destruction, perhaps as a way to feel heard or to compensate for feelings of inferiority. This contrast taught me early on about the different motivations behind protest and the importance of maintaining dignity in dissent. It was a time of communes and ashrams, where many of us sought deeper meaning and connection. While most of us were peaceful, those few who embraced chaos left a lasting impression on how I view collective action today.

Spiritual Exploration: Lessons from Gurus and Ashrams

During that era, many of us lived on communes or ashrams, seeking guidance from various teachers and gurus. While these figures often had profound insights, many also struggled with their own imperfections, sometimes exploiting their followers. Their charisma and charm were powerful, drawing in young seekers like myself who were on a quest for self-discovery. I immersed myself in this world, following one particular guru and even living on an ashram in upstate New York. There, I was involved in hosting other gurus and teaching meditation, which gave me the opportunity to interact closely with these teachers. Through these interactions, I began to see their flaws—flaws that many overlooked or that hadn’t yet been publicly exposed. This experience taught me to be discerning and to recognize that even spiritual leaders are human, with their own weaknesses and agendas. It was a humbling lesson in trust and the complexities of human nature.

Travels: A Journey of Self-Discovery

My travels through Europe and the East were transformative, but it was my stop in Israel in 1969 that had the greatest emotional and psychological impact. While living on the Island of Formentera in Spain, I decided to continue my journey to India. On the way, I stopped in Israel, a decision that reshaped my life. The country’s vibrant culture, resilient people, and deep historical roots resonated with me in ways I hadn’t anticipated. It was more than just a place; it was a turning point that made me realize I would one day return. From there, I continued to Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and finally India, where I was introduced to yoga and meditation. These practices became a cornerstone of my life, helping me understand how my thoughts often hindered me from living fully in the present. The journey taught me to embrace the “Here and Now,” a lesson that has stayed with me ever since.

Life in Israel: A New Beginning

My life took a significant turn when my wife and I made Aliyah—immigrating to Israel with our three young children in 1979. We returned to the United States in 1988 for family reasons, but Israel had already left an indelible mark on me. When I eventually returned to Israel 20 years ago, it felt like coming home. Living here has been a profound transformation, one that began with that first visit in 1969. Raising a family in Israel, surrounded by its rich tapestry of history and community, has deepened my sense of belonging and purpose. It’s a place where I’ve learned to appreciate the simplicity of life and the importance of connection.

Present Day: Living in the Moment

Now, as a grandfather of six amazing grandchildren and the parent of three talented children, I have found a place of being that defies explanation. The lessons I learned from my travels, from the spiritual teachers, and from my own introspection have all led me to this place of peace and gratitude. Meditation and yoga have been instrumental in helping me let go of the need to be right and to embrace the present moment. My thoughts no longer hold me hostage; instead, I am free to experience life as it unfolds. This shift has allowed me to fully devote myself to family, friends, and community, embracing love and living unconditionally. In a world filled with distractions and chaos, I’ve learned that breath by breath, we can transcend it all and live a full, meaningful life.

Gratitude: A Heartfelt Thank You

As I reflect on my life’s journey, I am profoundly grateful to all the teachers, friends, and family who have supported me along the way. From the spiritual guides who introduced me to meditation and yoga, to the friends who shared in my adventures and provided companionship during challenging times, to my family who has been my constant source of love and stability—each has contributed immensely to who I am today. I am especially thankful for their patience and understanding, allowing me to explore, make mistakes, and grow at my own pace. Their unwavering support has been a cornerstone of my life, and I am deeply appreciative of their presence and influence. Without their love and encouragement, I would not have been able to become the person I am today.
