By Harley Zipori. As the days start turning longer and the weather warms up, the children in schools and kindergartens all over Israel sing a song with the lyric “spring has arrived, Pesach is on the way”.
Well Pesach was on the way, Pesach came and now Pesach is gone. Till next year.
For those not familiar with the dietary rules of Passover, food made from any grains are not allowed except matzo. This includes beer which is made with barley and sometimes wheat. Beer ain’t called liquid bread for nothing.
So while we refrain from drinking beer during Pesach, it’s a good time to get out there and explore the world of Israeli boutique wine. Now I am not a wine aficionado at all but I do like good wine and having grown up in California, have a bit of knowledge and experience in that whole wine-grape thing.
When I went to the mini beer festival at moshav Givat Yeshayhu (see my first blog entry), My wife and I explored the moshav a bit and stumbled across the Hans Sternbach Winery. This is really a small operation making truly hand crafted wines from grapes grown in the area, some even from the moshav itself. I tasted a couple of the wines and even bought a bottle of a wine that I really liked. There is a restaurant on the premises which looks very nice and the whole area is lovely at this time of year. I recommend visiting before it gets hot and the hills turn brown.
Here is a website that tells you a bit about the winery: Israel Wines
I’ll have more on beer next time.
