Sabine Sterk: The Allies Who Stand and Those Who Betray

On October 7, 2023, Israel awoke to a nightmare. Hamas terrorists crossed the border in a coordinated massacre, murdering over 1,200 Israelis; children in their beds, concert-goers dancing under the sun, elderly couples in their homes. Hundreds were taken hostage into Gaza. The scenes were not the product of war, they were crimes against humanity.

For a moment, the world seemed to understand.

The First Wave of Support

In the days after the attack, nations that value democracy and human life stepped forward:

  • United States: President Biden called Israel’s defense “ironclad” and mobilized military aid, including interceptors for the Iron Dome and precision weapons.
  • Canada:  Approved weapons exports to help Israel protect its citizens.
  • Germany: Declared solidarity and sent military equipment.
  • India: Condemned the attack outright, deepening cooperation on counter-terrorism.
  • Czech Republic & Hungary : Became vocal defenders of Israel in the EU, refusing to equate Hamas’s atrocities with Israel’s right to defend itself.

It looked as though the moral line was clear: terrorism would not be rewarded, and Israel would have the backing it needed to dismantle Hamas.

When the Wind Changed

By early 2024, the tone shifted. The Hamas propaganda machine flooded the media with staged images and false narratives, Pallywood at full force. Public opinion in parts of the West began to waver, and some leaders gave in.

  • France: By April 2025, President Macron announced his intent to recognize a Palestinian state. By July, he confirmed the recognition would come at the UN in September 2025. This, despite Gaza still being run by a listed terror organization.

  • United Kingdom: The new Labour government hinted it would follow France, dressing it up as “part of a two-state solution.”

  • Germany:  In August 2025, Berlin paused arms shipments, sending a dangerous message at a critical moment.

  • Australia: Once seen as a dependable ally, Canberra announced it too would recognize Palestine in September 2025. Many in Israel see this as a betrayal—rewarding Hamas’s slaughter with political legitimacy.

Those Still Standing With Israel

The erosion of support is real but Israel is far from alone.

  • United States:  Military aid, intelligence sharing, and diplomatic protection remain strong.

  • India: Strategic ties are deepening, with Israel openly supporting India’s anti-terror operations in May 2025.

  • Argentina: President Javier Milei’s “Isaac Accords” are bringing Latin American states like Uruguay, Panama, and Costa Rica closer to Israel.

  • Eastern European allies: Czech Republic and Hungary refuse to bend to fashionable political pressure in Brussels.

These countries recognize that appeasing terrorism has never produced peace, it has only encouraged more bloodshed.

A New Voice From the Arab World

In 2025, a surprising development emerged: parts of the Arab world began to condemn Hamas outright. At the UN in July 2025, Saudi Arabia, alongside Indonesia and others, supported a declaration calling for Hamas to relinquish control of Gaza.

This is not normalization, but it is a historic shift. It shows that even in the Arab world, the reality is sinking in: Hamas is a destabilizing force that harms Palestinians as much as it harms Israel.

Why Recognition Now Is Wrong

France, the UK, and Australia claim that recognizing a Palestinian state is about peace. But Gaza remains under Hamas control, and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank has not held elections in nearly two decades. Recognition now is not “peacebuilding”, it is a green light to terrorists everywhere.

It sends a deadly message: massacre civilians, take hostages, and you’ll be rewarded with a seat at the United Nations.

Israel’s Way Forward

Israel has never survived by counting on the approval of others. It survives by defending itself, building alliances with those who share its values, and refusing to compromise with terror.

In 2025, even as some so-called friends waver, Israel can see hope on the horizon:

  • Loyal partners in the U.S., India, and parts of Latin America.

  • A growing willingness in parts of the Arab world to speak the truth about Hamas.

  • A national resolve that has never been broken.

Israel has been underestimated before. Those who betray it will learn; Israel does not bow to the shifting winds of international politics. It endures. It wins. And it will continue to stand as the one democracy in a region that desperately needs it.
