Michael Ordman: This Week’s Sanity Report from Israel Aug. 2025
Unusually, there are only five medical articles in this week’s Positive Israel newsletter. Then it struck me – the “Good Medicine” article shows that not all medicine has to be in the form of research, pills or surgery. As Sharon in her Real Jerusalem Streets article proves, the feel-good factor is better than any conventional medicine for relieving anxiety and trauma pain.
Who could not be healed from their melancholy by reading about Jewish Israelis restoring vineyards for Christian monks. Or Israelis helping flood victims in Texas? Or providing drinking water for thirsty African villages? How about weddings of wounded soldiers to their nurses? Or an organization specifically to support female soldiers.
Then there are many heartwarming news stories that highlight how Israelis benefit the world. Producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel; joint Quantum AI R&D with Arab Gulf states; a pocket spectrometer to help make agricultural decisions; X-ray security scanners; and natural preservatives.
Israel is THE place to go for R&R (Rest & Recuperation) especially as the jellyfish have vanished from the beaches. You can also be inspired by watching Israelis prove that disabilities do not prevent them from achieving sporting success. Or you can participate in archaeological digs that constantly unearth Jewish treasures from this holy, ancient land. Go on – you’ll feel a lot better for it!
The photo (TY Sharon) is from “The Good Medicine Experience” at the Friends of Zion Center in Jerusalem.
The highlights include:
- Heartwarming Israeli recovery stories from the war in Gaza.
- Israeli breakthrough in spinal cord surgery.
- Israelis are restoring vines and olive trees at a monastery
- Israeli startup speeds up production of eco-friendly aviation fuel.
- Two Israeli women win the lottery on consecutive days.
- Israeli comedy about kidnapping is a (surprise?) hit with Israeli audiences.
- Israelis were dancing for joy (and medals) in Vietnam.
- More ancient Jewish history unearthed in Israel.
