Lee Diamond – Jew vi Nation
Somehow they emerged.
They used to be referred to as
Sabres — prickly on the surface
But sweet on the inside
They used to referred to as rude and pushy
And even insensitive
They used to be referred to as Hebrew speaking “goyim”
Hardly Jewish, hardly connected to Jewish history
They were considered to be ignorant of their own tradition and culture.
Non conforming
Brash
Impolite
Inappropriate
We never noticed the change
We never realized that there was a new Israeli emerging
With the sweetness of our milk and honey
Inside and out
They absorbed the land as the land absorbed them
The produce of the ancient now ran in their bloodstream
They became natural Jews
Jewish life and rhythm pulsated in their being; in their songs
In their holidays and in their dreams
They learned to give and to share and to help
And to respect
And to volunteer
Their smile is so real and genuine
Their tears are from the innermost place of their being
They are honest and real and their sacrifice is unspoken
They are touched by a siren as their nation mourns
They remember
They hug each other as their hearts meet
No thorns prevent these hugs
As comrades in arms and in peace and hope
As brothers and sisters
As sons and daughters
And as Jews through and through
And we never noticed them emerging
But they emerged as butterflies from our cocoon
So beautiful ~~So brilliant
Each of a magnificent and different color and pattern
But free to fly
And to carry us on their wings
They are our “״התקוה
