The 18 dogs from the IDF’s canine unit that have been killed since October 7 will be memorialized by the Petach Tikva Municipality. Each of the city’s dog parks will be named after one of the dogs – and inside the park, a sign will be placed showing a picture of each dog and their name.

The IDF’s canine unit’s combat soldiers are commando fighters who carry out operational activities with the military using dogs for designated tasks. On October 7, the combat soldiers were sent to the communities around the Gaza area. The soldiers fought against the terrorists and rescued many civilians under fire while the rest of the unit’s fighters joined special forces that operated.

The unit’s fighters and their dogs have been a central part of the Gaza war ever since, fighting in tunnels with special forces, locating, identifying, and attacking terrorists, marking explosive devices, and more.

As a result of their deadly encounters, 18 of the unit’s dogs have been killed, saving the lives of soldiers in the process.

Rami Greenberg, mayor of Petach Tikva, said, “The municipality works to commemorate the fallen heroes of the war, IDF soldiers – the heroes and heroines, – and also commemorate those who walk on all fours, the dogs of the IDF canine unit, who assisted our forces in fighting under fire and ultimately sacrificing their lives. We greatly appreciate them as well.”
