What a rollercoaster ride the last 24 hours has been with regard to our war with Hamas. Yesterday Egypt announced a proposal for a ceasefire: Both sides would stop firing, and then in 48 hours parties would convene in Cairo and – via an intermediary – discuss terms for a more permanent truce. Kerry was said to be coming to Cairo to participate. This really did not have a good feel to it, and there was anxiety in several quarters here regarding what appeared to be pending capitulation by…

Many different officials and others are now pitching the idea that demilitarization of the Gaza Strip should follow after a cease fire goes into effect (if and when it does). Unfortunately, if there is one thing we have learned from the Oslo experience it is that third parties are profoundly unreliable in such matters. The CIA no doubt does fantastic work spying around the world, but when the White House assigned them the task of evaluating the performance/compliance of PA security…

It’s like the old joke: Why do Jewish men die before their wives? Because they want to. Civilizations for the most part die because they no longer want to live. That is the nub of my 2011 book They cease to believe in their own future and distract themselves from the prospect of extinction as best they can. Hellenistic Greece was the first universal demographic disaster; it gave us prototypes of the steam engine and the computer (via Hero of Alexandria) as well as the modern literary…

Vol. 14, No. 23 July 15, 2014Iran is an arsonist, inflaming the conflicts in the Middle East. Since the 2012 “Pillar of Defense Operation,” Iran has heavily invested in improving the quantity and quality of the rockets in the Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) arsenals. Its endgame is to preserve its influence via its proxies and to use the Palestinian organizations as Iran’s first defense line. Iranian rockets include Grad, Fajr-3 and the longer ranged Fajr-5, M-75,…

In the current conflagration between Israel and Gaza, news agencies mistakenly report that the a “cease fire” is being discussed with Hamas, such as the “cease fire” that resulted in the armistice that ended hostilities in World War I, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the eleventh month on Nov. 11 1918, paving the way to the Versailles peace treaty and the genesis of the League of Nations. However, the three Arabic nuanced terms being discussed with Hamas as a…

Why is the U.S. downplaying or denying attacks against Christians? “What about the churches which were desecrated? Is this not blasphemy? Where is justice?” – Fr. James Channan OP, Director of The Peace Center, Lahore, Pakistan. Members of the Islamic group al-Shabaab publicly beheaded the mother of two girls, ages 8 and 15, and her cousin after discovering they were Christians. The girls “were witnesses to the slaughter.” – Somalia. “Christian teaching is…
Iran: ‘All Zionists are within the range of the resistance’s missiles’

Iranian military leaders on Monday celebrated Hamas’ use of advanced long-range rockets that were supplied to the terror group by the Iranian regime. Iran’s role in arming Hamas militants with more sophisticated artillery capable of reaching deep into Israel has fueled concerns among lawmakers that U.S. negotiators are not doing enough to address Iran’s support for terror during ongoing nuclear discussions. Israeli and United Nations officials have confirmed that Hamas is…
The United Nations has determined that Israel’s military warned civilians before most attacks on the Gaza Strip. A UN report asserted that Israel’s military notified families to evacuate their homes in the Gaza Strip. The report, dated July 9, said civilian casualties took place after Israeli officers telephoned targeted buildings. “At least 35 residential buildings were reportedly targeted and destroyed, resulting in the majority of the civilian casualties recorded so far, including an…
