Dead Sea Scrolls World Premiere Exhibition – United States

DEAD SEA SCROLLS: LIFE AND FAITH IN BIBLICAL TIMES EXHIBITION TO MAKE WORLD PREMIERE AT DISCOVERY TIMES SQUARE IN OCTOBER. Exhibit Premiers Largest Collection of Holy Land Artifacts featuring 10 Dead Sea Scrolls on Display, Over 500 Biblical Era Artifacts Along With an Authentic Two-Ton Stone from Jerusalem’s Western Wall

Beginning October 28, Discovery Times Square (226 West 44th Street) will host the world premiere engagement of Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in Biblical Times, a new exhibition featuring the largest and most comprehensive collection of Holy Land artifacts ever organized including one of the largest collections of the famed 2000-year-old scrolls ever displayed in the U.S. Featuring over 500 Biblical era artifacts, the exhibition explores life in ancient Israel at the time the Bible was composed through the period the Dead Sea Scrolls were written and eventually hidden.  Considered one of history’s greatest archeological discoveries, the exhibition highlights the contents of the scrolls—the oldest written version of the Hebrew Bible— and provides a unique window to the time when the traditions we know as Judaism and Christianity emerged from ancient Israel.

Following its New York Engagement, the exhibition will travel to Philadelphia’s The Franklin Institute for a 5-month run beginning in May 2012.

Exhibition highlights include more than 500 artifacts from the Biblical to Byzantine Period including many never before seen objects from recent archaeological excavations in Israel including Jerusalem.  The collection will provide an intriguing glimpse into life in ancient Israel from the Biblical era to the birth of Judaism and Christianity in the Holy Land — from everyday household items, cosmetics and jewelry to ceramics, textiles, mosaics and stone carvings as well as weapons of war and religious objects. In addition, the exhibit will feature a scale recreation of a section of Jerusalem’s Western Wall — complete with an actual two-ton stone from the Wall.

The 20-scroll exhibit (10 scrolls displayed at a time, with 4 scrolls making their world debut) will include the Biblical books of Genesis, Leviticus, Exodus and Kings, and several others.

This exhibition is created by the Israel Antiquities Authority from the collections of the Israel National Treasures and organized by Running Subway Productions and The Franklin Institute. The exhibition is curated by Dr. Risa Levitt Kohn and Debora Ben Ami with planning and design by Ralph Appelbaum Associates, New York, NY and consultation by Dr. Lawrence Schiffman (Vice-Provost of Undergraduate Education, Yeshiva University).
