Ahead of a watershed U.N. vote expected in September on Palestinian statehood, The Israel Project (TIP) is releasing an interactive map, “United Nations General Assembly: Attitudes on Israel/Palestine Interactive Map and Fact Sheets,” detailing U.N. member states key to the outcome of the measure.
The Palestinian leadership, headed by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, is preparing to launch a bid for U.N. recognition of Palestinian independence as early as July while spurning direct peace talks with Israel.
The interactive project provides comprehensive fact sheets for each U.N. member state, detailing related statistics about each country including its recent foreign affairs history; relationship with Israel; ties to Iran; and percentage of pro-Israel votes at the United Nations in 2009 and 2010.
“A Palestinian state and lasting peace can only be created through negotiations on the
basis of mutual recognition and respect,” said Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, founder and president of The Israel Project. “Unilateral U.N. declarations will likely embolden extremists and make peace harder to achieve.”
The 86 countries highlighted in the map have been identified by TIP as those whose votes are crucial to opposing the Palestinian unilateralism drive.
Among these countries, the United States, Australia and Canada rank among the highest in pro-Israel U.N. votes in 2009 and 2010.
Palestinian efforts to avoid negotiations with Israel and declare statehood through the United Nations is widely opposed by the American electorate, as well as the U.S. Congress and the White House.
Following a recent U.S. national survey commissioned by TIP, Republican pollster Neil Newhouse explained: “Americans recognize that this conflict is about more than simple territorial disputes. A lasting peace essentially starts with acknowledging Israel’s right to exist.”
Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg said: “While Americans have clearly expressed the importance that they place on a peace agreement, they have also made it clear that the current Palestinian strategy is not the proper way to go about achieving that goal.”
