UNPACKED – Moshe Dayan: Iconic Military Leader
Moshe Dayan, one of the most iconic Israeli figures of all time, is best known for his military leadership – especially in the Six-Day War of 1967. Who was this legendary general, how did a kibbutz kid become “Moshe Dayan” and what’s the story with that black eye patch anyway?
There’s no doubt that Dayan was a real military expert, but he was also an expert at building his own self image. In the days before 24-hour news access, and decades before social media, he had enough media savvy to take the spotlight away from other military leaders – including the prime minister – and portray himself as Israel’s hero.
What do you think about Moshe Dayan? Does he represent a true Israeli hero to you? Does history reward those with the best PR, not necessarily those who do the most?
