IsraelSeen Exclusive – Saving a Child in Need

Last Tuesday, Shlomo Avidan was riding home from work, when his United Hatzalah radio suddenly buzzed. The dispatcher alerted Avidan that there was an unconscious baby in his vicinity. The dedicated volunteer EMT instantly sped off to the given location, a local daycare center in Petach Tikvah.

Dashing inside, Avidan found the 11-month-old boy lying on the floor, unresponsive. The United Hatzalah medic still detected a pulse and faint signs of breathing, though the infant’s caregivers were at a loss to explain how this had occurred. Suspecting that the little boy may have suffered a traumatic fall, Avidan checked the baby front and back. When he turned the child over he discovered that the tiny patient was bleeding from a serious head wound. Avidan began treating the child for his injury.

Within minutes, a pair of United Hatzalah volunteer paramedics arrived on location to assist Avidan with rescue efforts. The crew of a Mobile Intensive Care Unit joined them on scene. Avidan and his colleagues administered high-flow oxygen, provided initial immobilization and opened an IV for quick access to fluids and medications. Avidan then assisted as the little boy was transferred to the ambulance and intubated. He was rushed off to the nearby Rabin Medical Center for further definitive care.

Avidan’s rapid response gave this little boy the best chance of full recovery.
