and the Gold of Egypt – Parashat Bo

Dr. Yitzhaq Hayut-Man. The name of the third Parashah in the Book of Exodus (Shemot, meaning “Names of…”) is Bo (בא)  - meaning “Come” in the imperative. We have already encountered in the Book of Genesis three Parashot whose name means a movement – Lekh-Lekhah (לך-לך; “Go {to} yourself”), vaYetse (ויצא; “he (would) exit”) and vaYigash (ויגש; “he (would) approach”).

Semantic Insights for Parashat vaYehi – Gen. 47:28-50:26

Dr. Yitzhaq Hayut-Man. This Parashah deals with Ya’aqov’s death, yet the name of the Parashah – vaYehy-ויחי – suggests life – hayim. A somewhat similar case was in Parashat haye Sarah (“Lives of Sarah” – Gen. 23:1-25:18) which tells of Sarah’s death and burial.

Semantic Insights Parashat vaYigash – 44:18-47:27

Dr. Yitzhaq Hayut-Man. The Name of the Parashah and its Meaning. The key word for this Parashah is va’Yigash (ויגש), a verb related to Gishah (גישה) – which can have two meanings: on the one hand approaching towards meeting, on the other hand hitgosheshut (התגוששות) – a violent struggle, a brawl. It is thus like a wrestling match, that at its peak the two brothers stand face to face, and they are not just brothers but leaders that everything depends on their face-to-face dealing.

Semantic Insights for Parashat miQez Gen. 41:1 – 44:17

by Dr. Yitzhaq Hayut-Man. The Parasha is called MiQeZ מקץ, namely “at the End” or rather “from the End” and reflects on several sorts of eschatological matters of going from the ending of one state to the start of another state. For PaR’OH פרעה this was a temporary awakening from his dream – vaYIQaz PaR’OH ויקץ פרעה (41:4) from the dream about the cows, then he fell asleep again and dreamt about the eyes of corn.
